Financial Aid FAQs

Who can be included in the family size on FAFSA®?

Family size for an Independent student generally includes:

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse (if married)
    • If you are changing from Dependent to Independent because you have gotten married, you will need to update your FAFSA® with your spouse’s information, not just update your family size
  • Your dependent children who receive more than half of their support from you during the award year (even if temporarily living away for school, military service, or a mission)
  • Other individuals who live with you and receive more than half of their support from you, and will continue to receive that support during the award year

If you are a dependent student, your parent(s) will report their family size using the same guidelines for their family.
