What scholarship opportunities are there for international students?

While there are no specific scholarships available for international students, you may be eligible for BYU-Idaho Scholarships. Check out the qualifications for BYU-Idaho scholarships available to international students:

You may also apply for private scholarships that you qualify for.

Scholarship searching is personal, and international students often have the best success by focusing on opportunities that align closely with their background, experience, and connections.

Start by taking time to evaluate what makes you unique—your experiences, interests, skills, community involvement, or career goals. Strong applications are specific, thoughtful, and clearly show why you are a good fit for each scholarship. Be sure to read the application carefully to make sure you understand what is needed to apply and that you have the necessary qualifications for that specific scholarship.

Effective ways to find scholarship opportunities include:

  • Local and community-based scholarships, which often have fewer applicants.
  • Teachers and Department Chairs may have connections and ideas for scholarship opportunities in your chosen field.
  • Organizations or businesses you already have connections to, such as employers, professional associations, alumni groups, or community organizations.
  • Banks and Credit Unions often provide scholarships or tuition assistance to students in need. One example is the tuition assistance offered by Deseret First Credit Union, focused on recently returned missionaries. Get more info here.
  • Scholarship search databases that allow you to filter by interests, field of study, or background.
  • AI-based search tools, which can help identify scholarships related to your interests or academic goals.

Helpful tips for applying:

  • Apply early—many scholarship deadlines are sooner than expected.
  • Use only legitimate, vetted resources and never pay to apply.
  • Follow all instructions carefully, including essay length and required documents.
  • Ask for recommendation letters early and request that recommenders be specific about your strengths.
  • Save and refine your essays so they can be adapted for future applications.
