How Does Financial Aid Work?
Financial Aid isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Most of what you receive depends on what you apply for! Aid can come from multiple sources, including the federal government, the State of Idaho, BYU-Idaho scholarships, private organizations, and employers. Review the options below to discover what’s available and determine what you may qualify for.

Thanks to donors, BYU-Idaho is able to offer a variety of scholarships. Explore all the different options available and find out what you qualify for!
BYUI Scholarship Overview
- Academic Scholarship
Academic scholarships are merit-based. They are based on your academic performance. - Need-Based Scholarship
Need-based scholarships are awarded based on your financial need demonstrated on the FAFSA®. - Talent Scholarship
Talent Scholarships are scholarships awarded based on your talent in specific fields. - Returned Missionary Scholarship
BYU-Idaho offers a one-time scholarship for returned missionaries.

Federal Aid
This is aid you can receive from the Federal Government. Pell Grants and Federal student loans are applied for by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).
- Pell Grants
A Pell grant is money given to you by the government that you don't need to pay back. - Federal Loans
A federal loan is money that the government lends you that you have to pay back.
Other Aid
This includes aid such as private loans and State of Idaho Scholarships, like the Idaho LAUNCH Scholarship. Each scholarship/grant has its own qualifications. Learn more below.
- Idaho State Aid
Includes the Idaho LAUNCH Grant, the Idaho Opportunity Scholarship, Idaho Governor's Cup Scholarship, and the Idaho Gear Up Grant.

Aid may be available to students who are veterans, actively serving in the military, or whose parents served in the military.
