What Kinds of Circumstances Can Be Considered for a SAP Appeal?
A SAP appeal may be considered only if you experienced serious, unexpected circumstances that:
- Were beyond your control
- Occurred after the semester began
- Significantly disrupted your ability to complete your coursework
- Are now resolved or being effectively managed
Each appeal is reviewed individually. Submitting an appeal does not guarantee approval.
Examples of Circumstances That May Be Considered
The following are examples of situations that may qualify, if properly documented:
- Death of an immediate family member
- Severe illness, injury, or medical emergency
- Mental health crisis
- Serious personal crisis
- Military activation or required military service
Documentation must show when the circumstance occurred, how it affected your academics, and that it is resolved or being effectively managed.
Examples of Circumstances That Typically Are Not Approved
The following situations generally do not qualify for a SAP appeal:
- Work conflicts or job responsibilities
- Being unprepared for coursework
- Heavy course loads
- Missed deadlines or misunderstanding requirements
- Marriage
- Normal pregnancy or birth of a healthy baby
- Ongoing conditions without a plan showing effective management
Important Reminder
Because SAP appeals are limited, you should submit an appeal only when you are ready to meet probation or academic plan requirements.
If you are unsure whether your circumstances may qualify, contact the Financial Aid Office before submitting an appeal.
