When a student officially or unofficially withdraws from school what happens with their federal financial aid?
If you officially withdraw from all Program Applicable (PA) and/or Remedial classes, federal regulations require the university to review your financial aid.
Here’s what happens if you officially withdraw:
- A Return of Title IV (R2T4) calculation is completed to determine how much aid you earned.
- The amount of aid you earn is based on how many days you attended your classes.
- Any aid you did not earn must be returned.
- BYU-Idaho sends the unearned aid back to the U.S. Department of Education on your behalf.
- The returned amount will appear as a charge on your student account, which you are responsible for paying.
An unofficial withdrawal occurs when you stop participating in all Program Applicable (PA) and/or Remedial classes and receive a UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) grade.
Here’s what happens if you are unofficially withdrawn:
- At the end of the semester, your professor(s) report whether you participated in your class(es).
- If participation is reported, a Return of Title IV (R2T4) calculation is completed to determine how much aid you earned.
- Any aid you did not earn must be returned.
- If it is reported that you did not participate in the classes, you are not eligible for federal financial aid for those classes, and all aid must be returned.
- BYU-Idaho sends the unearned aid back to the U.S. Department of Education on your behalf.
- The returned amount will appear as a charge on your student account, which you are responsible for paying.
