Financial Aid FAQs

Retakes & Remedial Courses

If you need remedial classes or to repeat a class, you can get federal aid!

Retaking Classes

Federal financial aid may be used to retake a course under these conditions:

  • If you fail a class on your first attempt, you may retake that class and still receive federal financial aid.
  • If you pass a class (D- or higher), you may retake the course one additional time to improve your grade and receive federal financial aid.
  • If a class was passed and then failed, federal financial aid cannot be used for another attempt.

Remedial Classes

BYU-Idaho offers a limited number of remedial courses to help students prepare for college-level English and Math:

  • ENG 106
  • ENG 109
  • MATH 100B
  • MATH 101

Students may receive federal financial aid for up to 30 attempted remedial credits.

Remedial credits:

  • Count toward enrollment level (part-time or full-time)
  • Are included in SAP and GPA calculations

Are included in Cost of Attendance (COA) and subject to the Financial Aid Determination Date

Don’t panic if you fail a class! You can retake the class and still get federal aid so you can pass it.

If you take a class and pass but don’t like the grade you received, you can repeat the class and still receive federal aid. You can only do this for one more attempt, so make sure you pass!
