Need-Based Scholarships

BYU-Idaho offers Need-Based Scholarships, also known as The BYU-Idaho Scholarship, to assist hard-working students facing financial barriers while pursuing their educational goals.

About Need-Based Scholarships

The BYU-Idaho Scholarship is awarded based on your financial need. It helps with tuition costs for the award year's Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters.

How do we decide who gets the scholarship?

We evaluate your financial need based on information from your scholarship application and FAFSA. Awards are given based on available funds.

Do you qualify for this scholarship?

  • You must be a BYU-Idaho campus student without an earned bachelor's degree
  • You must complete both the scholarship application and the FAFSA by March 1st
    • International and DACA students are not required to submit the FAFSA

How do I apply?

  • Applications are open October 1 – March 1 each year
  • Complete the Scholarship Application
  • Complete theFAFSA for the corresponding year by March 1

How much money could you receive?

  • Your award amount depends on how many credits you're taking on the Financial Aid Determination Date (FADD)
    • If you change your credit load before FADD, your award will change too
  • Credits don't need to be Program Applicable (apply to your major)
  • Only courses taken for credit are included in your credit count for this scholarship.
    • Audited courses do not qualify.

How do you keep your scholarship?

  • Enroll in at least 6 credits
  • Apply each year by the March 1st deadline
  • You’re no longer eligible to apply if you’ve earned 140 or more credits by the end of Winter semester.
    • All credits on your official transcript count, including Advanced Placement, language exam credits, and transfer credits

Are you a missionary or planning to serve? Here's what you need to know!

Recently Returned Missionaries: You can apply for the BYU-Idaho Scholarship before the FADD of your first semester back.

What if I'm a new student?

If you're admitted to BYU-Idaho after March 1st, you can complete the scholarship application and FAFSA before the FADD of your first semester.

Can you combine this scholarship with other scholarships?

To increase your financial support, your Academic Scholarship can be combined (“stacked”) with other BYU-Idaho scholarships but the total can’t be more than full LDS tuition. These include:

For example, if you receive a Half Tuition Academic Scholarship, you could also apply for and receive a Talent Scholarship from the Music department, increasing your total award, but not going over tuition costs.

How can I check my scholarship status?

If you have questions about whether you qualify, your award amounts, stacking awards or any other concerns, please email scholarships@byui.edu

When will I receive my scholarship?

  • The scholarship is added to your student account the first week of the semester
  • It's applied first to tuition charges
  • Be sure to sign up for eRefund so any remaining funds can go directly to your bank account
