Frequently asked questions about BYU-Idaho scholarships.

Getting Your Scholarship Money:

Scholarship money goes into your student account at the start of the semester.
  • It pays for tuition, fees, and on-campus housing first
  • To get any leftover money, sign up foreRefund. This takes a few days to reach your bank account.
No, all BYU-Idaho scholarships are based on member tuition amounts.
No, you don’t have to write a Thank you letter to get your scholarship, but we really encourage you to write one. It’s a nice thing to do.

Taking A Break:

Yes, If you're awarded an academic scholarship and receive a mission call, contact the Admissions Office to defer the scholarship until you return.
No, you can only save scholarships for missions. If you don’t attend, you lose that semester’s scholarship.

Attending School:

  • If you take 6-11 credits, you get part of your scholarship.
  • If you take less than 6 credits, you lose your scholarship.
Yes, scholarships are awarded for all tracks you enroll in - Fall, Winter and Spring semesters
No, scholarships are not available for Summer Session.
No, once you graduate, you can’t use scholarships anymore.

Merit Scholarship

  • Incoming Freshmen: Send your test scores and high school transcripts to transcriptsubmit@byui.edu
  • Transfer Students who previously attended another university: Send your college transcripts to transcriptsubmit@byui.edu
  • We’ll automatically check if you qualify.
  • Send scores and transcripts prior to the Tuesday before your first semester starts.
Yes, if you have ACT/SAT scores and high school grades that qualify.
Yes, if you have not attended, and your scores are processed with admissions at transciptsubmit@byui.edu by the Tuesday before your first semester starts.
Get good grades at BYU-Idaho
You need a 3.75 GPA or higher
If you keep this GPA, you can keep your scholarship all four years.
Yes, we will evaluate your transfer GPA based on the transcripts received in the Admissions office prior to your admission to BYU-Idaho and will automatically award the Merit scholarship if you qualify.

BYU-Idaho Academic Scholarship

  • For 2024-2025, we checked grades at the end of Fall 2023.
  • Starting 2025-2026, we’ll check grades after the Winter semester.
If you don’t have a full Merit scholarship and your BYU-Idaho grades qualify you for a higher Academic Scholarship, you can get the better one.
If you think there’s a mistake with your scholarship:

  • Email scholarships@byui.edu
  • Tell them you think your grades qualify for a scholarship
  • They’ll check and let you know

Returned Missionary Scholarship

  • Make sure the admissions office knows when you returned from your mission.
  • The scholarship should show up in your financial aid portal automatically.
Update our team about your return by emailing scholarships@byui.edu with the following information:
  • Mission Service Dates,
  • Mission Release Certificate, and
  • Update missionary service dates with the Admissions office via email at admissions@byui.edu
Yes, you can get this on top of a full tuition scholarship.
