Dropping Classes: Impact on Your Financial Aid
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS consult with the Financial Aid Office before dropping classes. The impact on your aid depends on various circumstances.
Key Points to Remember
1. Timing Matters:
- Dropping BEFORE FADD (Financial Aid Determination Date) may affect both BYU-Idaho scholarships and Federal aid.
- Dropping AFTER FADD won't affect BYU-Idaho Scholarships but may still impact Federal aid.
2. Type of Class is Important:
- Dropping Program Applicable (PA) classes impacts Federal aid.
- Dropping any class impacts BYU-Idaho Scholarships.
3. Financial Implications:
- You may need to repay some already disbursed aid.
- Future aid eligibility might be affected.
- You might have to pay back financial aid and tuition if you drop classes after the add/drop date and before FADD.
- Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) might impact future federal aid eligibility.
Impact on Federal Aid
- Only Program Applicable (PA) credits count for Federal Aid eligibility.
- Your Pell Grant amount may decrease if you drop all classes or stop attending without dropping, even after the FADD.
- Dropping below half-time enrollment may also affect student loan offers.
- Dropping classes after FADD gives you “W” grades, which can affect your future aid (SAP).

Impact on BYU-Idaho Scholarships
- BYU-Idaho Scholarships are finalized at 11:59 pm on the FADD.
- Dropping credits BEFORE FADD may reduce BYU-Idaho Scholarships.
- Dropping credits AFTER FADD will not affect BYU-Idaho scholarships for that semester.
- Waitlisted courses don't count towards your enrollment for aid purposes.
- BYU-Idaho scholarships are awarded based on enrollment levels, so dropping even one credit could greatly reduce your scholarship.
