Deferments

When you take a break from school or go on a mission, you may incur unintended and costly consequences for your financial aid. Here is what to be aware of when you quit attending for a period of time.

Any time you are not enrolled in at least 6 program-applicable credits for 6 months or more, your loan servicer will require you to start repaying your loans. Contact your loan servicer to plan accordingly.

Missionary Deferments

  • Loans: If you have received loans and are leaving on a mission, you are still responsible for those loans. You will be required to make loan payments in your absence. Contact your loan servicer to plan accordingly.
  • BYU-Idaho Scholarships: If you officially defer for a mission, your BYU-Idaho scholarship will remain available to you upon your return. BYU Idaho scholarships are not held for any other type of deferment.
  • Idaho LAUNCH Grant: If you are receiving Idaho LAUNCH Grant and leaving on a mission, you must submit an extension on your LAUNCH portal.
  • Idaho Opportunity Scholarship: Leave of absence requests must be submitted in writing to jmiller@edu.idaho.gov
  • Private Scholarships: BYU-Idaho cannot hold private scholarship funds while you are on your mission. Any funds sent here will be returned to the scholarship provider. Reach out directly to them to make arrangements.

Medical Deferment

If you leave school during the semester for medical reasons, it is treated like a withdrawal for financial aid purposes. A calculation will need to be done to determine if you need to pay all or part of your loans back immediately. Backdating the withdrawal to the beginning of the semester could make it so you owe all aid back. Consult with the financial aid office before withdrawing so you know what to expect.
