Usage Guidelines

Start With BYU-Idaho Photography
Start with photography created by BYU-Idaho Photo Services. If existing photography does not meet your needs, contact your Strategic Communications Coordinator about arranging a custom photo shoot.
Request a Custom Photo Shoot
When existing photography doesn’t meet your needs, work with your Strategic Communications Coordinator and Photo Services to plan a custom photo shoot.
Use Stock Photography Carefully
When stock photography is necessary, choose images that feel natural and appropriate for BYU-Idaho. Confirm that the image is properly licensed before use.
Choose Authentic, Appropriate Images
Choose photos that feel authentic to the BYU-Idaho experience and appropriate for the message. People, activities, clothing, and settings should appropriately represent university standards.
Match the Season and Community
Select seasonally appropriate photography that represents the diversity and experiences of the BYU-Idaho community.
Preserve Natural Composition
Choose images with comfortable framing, adequate context, and room around the main subject.
Let the Subject Guide the Tone
Match the tone of the photography to the message. Serious subjects may call for more somber imagery, but avoid images that are unnecessarily dark, distorted, or grotesque.
Preserve the Integrity of the Photo
Avoid awkward cropping, excessive zooming, distortion, or other treatments that change the meaning of an image. Do not use photography in ways that imply an endorsement or relationship that does not exist.
Use Approved Photography
Use photography owned by BYU-Idaho or properly licensed for the intended use. Do not download, publish, or reuse photography unless the university has permission to use it.
Do Not Use Personal Photos in Official Communications
Do not use personal photographs of students in official university communication channels. Use approved BYU-Idaho photography instead.
Campus photography may include the temple in the background. If the temple is the primary subject of the image, contact BYU-Idaho Copyright for permission before use.
Permission is required to use images of living General Authorities. Contact BYU-Idaho Copyright for guidance before using these images in university communications.
Do not assume that images available through Gospel Media are cleared for BYU-Idaho promotional use. Contact University Communications to determine whether permission is required.
