As a Heber J. Grant Mentor, you'll step into something beautiful: being genuinely present in someone's story. You're not just giving advice; you're offering yourself, saying "I see you, I believe in you, and I'm here with you."

What Does Being a Mentor Really Look Like?
Show Up as Yourself: Be the person you needed when you were figuring things out. Share your real experiences: the messy parts, the victories, and everything in between.
Listen with Your Heart: Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply listen. Let them know they're not alone.
Open Doors: Share the resources and opportunities you've discovered. Help them see new possibilities.
Live the Values: Show what self-reliance, stewardship, and giving back look like as daily choices, not perfect ideals.

Why Your Story Matters
Every challenge you've faced, every lesson you've learned, every small victory you've celebrated... it all matters. The student you mentor doesn't need someone who has it all figured out. They need someone who understands what it's like to struggle, to doubt, and to keep going anyway.
Your Time: Just 2 to 4 hours a week of genuine connection.
Your Heart: The willingness to care about someone else's success as much as your own.
Your Impact: Immeasurable. You're not just changing one life; you're planting seeds that will grow for generations.

✓ Have made it through at least one semester (you know what it takes)
✓ Are living on campus (you're part of the community)

✓ Can give 2 to 4 hours a week (you're willing to invest in someone else)

Mentor Questions & Answers
The Heber J. Grant Peer-Mentoring community connects students—especially those from historically underrepresented backgrounds—with supportive, one-on-one mentors who offer friendship, consistent guidance, and help in pursuing personal, academic, professional, and spiritual goals. Mentors share both on-and off-campus experiences, helping students recognize their potential and confidently access the resources around them.
Mentors are individuals who have experience, compassion, and a desire to help others grow. You don’t need to be perfect—just willing to be a friend, show up, and support someone as they navigate life at BYU–Idaho and in Rexburg.
Mentees are matched based on shared interests, goals, life experiences, or availability. We aim to create meaningful connections where you can make a positive impact.
We encourage mentors to meet with their mentees weekly or biweekly, depending on both your availability and your mentee’s needs. In a world where people are increasingly isolated, we highly encourage in-person meetups to build real connection. That said, meetups are flexible and can be scheduled in person, over the phone, or online—whatever works best for both of you. Consistency is key to building trust and momentum.
Meetups can involve discussing goals, offering encouragement, help with planning, reviewing progress, doing a fun activity together or just listening. Your role is to be a friend and support—not to solve every problem.
Most mentorships last for a semester, though the exact length can vary based on the mentee's goals and progress.
What Happens Next?
If this feels right to you... if something inside you is saying "yes, I want to be part of this"... then let's talk. We'd love to hear your story and learn about what's drawing you to mentorship.
