Laboratory Safety at BYU-Idaho

On September 6, 2007, BYU-Idaho conducted a Laboratory Safety Seminar for campus faculty and staff. Seminar topics included biological safety, hazardous materials in laboratories, spill and emergency response, and keeping students and laboratory workers safe.

Lab Safety Seminar Summary

Biological Safety -  Bloodborne pathogens, function and use of a biosafety cabinet, introduction to the new Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 5th edition. A copy can be accessed here

Regulated Hazardous Materials in the Laboratory -  The academic laboratory has special guidelines set forth by 29CFR 1910 and 40CFR in relation to the handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Also, there are special requirements, as interpreted by OSHA and the EPA, that every principle investigator (PI), this is usually the professor assigned to a given laboratory, should understand. The Laboratory Standard is not optional. This seminar is designed to make sure the professor not only knows what is expected of him but specifically how to comply. Go here for the slide presentation.

Spill and Emergency Response -  How does a student, employee, or professor know when and who to call for help when an accident or emergency happens. This seminar is designed to prepare a professor for laboratory emergencies. Case studies from other universities will be used and guidelines provided to make sure that when an emergency occurs everyone, including students, are ready to respond. Regulations are applicable in many emergency situations. There is not PPT presentation on this subject, at the present. However, the Spill Report form can be accessed here.

Laboratory Safety -  This discussion centered around ten specific areas to focus on ensuring the safety of students and other laboratory workers. This topic ties in closely with the Laboratory Standard, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and Standard Operating Procedures necessary for every teaching and research laboratory.
