Academic Risk Outreach Tiers

Academic Risk Outreach Tiers were created to help assess and categorize students' at-risk levels.

Students at risk of not meeting the BYU-Idaho Academic Standards will have the registration holds and credit limits applied as outlined in the table below.

At-risk Tier Description Registration and Credit Limit Implications
1 cumulative GPA >=2.0 and <2.5 None
Note: Students in Tier 1 are proactively invited to take advantage of academic success resources.
2 cumulative GPA >=1.0 and <2.0 and repair GPA <=2.5 Credits limited to 12
3 cumulative GPA <1.0
Or
cumulative GPA >=1.0 and <2.0 and repair GPA >2.5
1. Registration hold applied until the student meets with an advisor.
2. Credits limited to 9, 6, and then 3 for each consecutive term in Tier 3.

An adjustment to credit limits may be considered if the student’s most recent term GPA is above 2.0.

Procedures

  1. Students with credit limits are encouraged to work with an academic advisor to create or update a success plan.
  2. Registration holds, and credit limits are applied after the add/drop deadline in the term following a change to a student’s tier status.
  3. If a student qualifies to move out of Tier 3 but later returns to Tier 3, the student will begin with a nine-credit limit rather than continuing with the limits they had previously in Tier 3. For example, the student below would have a nine-credit limit rather than a three-credit limit in term six.

Definitions

Target Graduation Credits: The minimum number of credits to earn a degree or make significant progress toward certificates.
The target graduation credits are set at 60 for online students and students seeking an associate degree. The target graduation credits for students seeking a bachelor’s degree are set at 120 credits.

Repair GPA: The average course GPA a student needs going forward to bring their cumulative GPA to above a 2.0 before the student reaches their target graduation credits.
The Repair GPA helps a student understand how well they need to perform in their future coursework to meet the minimum cumulative GPA graduation requirement (see Academic Standards).
