Accessibility Academic Grievance Procedures

Students going to and from classes on BYU-Idaho campus.

Faculty members and individual campus administrative departments are responsible for making reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities to ensure equal access to University services, programs, and activities. They are encouraged to contact the Accessibility Services Office by calling (208) 496-9210, emailing accessibility@byui.edu, or by visiting 181 Manwaring Center for general accommodation assistance for students with disabilities.

There may be occasions when a student has a concern or a complaint about academic accommodations not being met or granted in a course. Students are encouraged to work directly with their instructor, and the Accessibility Services Office to resolve those concerns. While it is anticipated that most accommodation concerns will be informally resolved at the lowest level of decision-making possible, occasionally the accommodation process may be unsatisfactory to the student.

In such cases, the student may submit a written request to the Dean of Students. (290 Kimball Building, 208-496-9200; see Student Grievance Policy and Statement of Non-discrimination).

The request should explain the nature of the grievance and the specific accommodation that is being requested along with any pertinent medical or clinical documentation. The Dean of Students (or designee), will make a preliminary investigation of the facts and circumstances of the matter by meeting with the student and other university stakeholders. The purpose of the meeting is to determine whether the student was properly accommodated, or if the accommodation request was/or is reasonable. After reviewing the information gathered through the grievance process, the Dean of Students will make a determination and notify the student and other university stakeholders in writing of the decision.

In situations where any party involved believes in good faith that their concerns were not properly addressed through the grievance process, and/or new and compelling information becomes available, the Student Life Vice President shall make the final determination with respect to the requested accommodation.
