Students who are deaf or hearing impaired may need sign language interpreters, captioning and transcription services. We recommend those needing these services contact our office at least 1 month in advance in order for us to coordinate these types of services. Failure to do so could result in you not having those services available in time for the first day of class.
For special events and performances on campus American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation may be available upon request. Requests for ASL interpreters must be made at least two weeks (14 days) in advance.
To submit a request for an ASL interpreter you will need to email Heidi Smith at smithhe@byui.edu, please provide the event, date, time and location, along with the number of people in your group.
If you have further questions about ASL interpreters for BYU Idaho events you can call (208) 496-9219.
BYU Idaho is exempt from Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is not required to provide ASL interpreters to non-students at events on campus. While we are not legally mandated to provide interpreting services for events on our campus, we recognize the importance of accessibility and inclusivity within our community. We will do our best to accommodate this request as a gesture of goodwill.
- BYU Idaho cannot guarantee ASL interpretation for every performance or event
- ASL interpretation is subject to interpreter availability and seat availability
- Seat preferences may not be available as we may have assigned accessibility seating for the event
- Requesting in advance helps to increase the likelihood of finding an interpreter for your preferred performance date
