Academic Standards

A change in the University's Academic Standards Policy was recently approved.  The policy is being simplified to the following:

Students must earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to be eligible to earn a degree or certificate.

Based on this new policy which went into effect April 17, 2017 (first day of Spring Semester 2017), your official Academic Standing will now be determined as one of the following:

1. GOOD:  eligible to continue enrolling in courses and persisting toward completion of a declared degree

2. INELIGIBLE:  not eligible to continue enrolling at BYUI

If your Academic Status was Academic Warning, Probation, or Suspension before or at the end of the 2017 Spring Semester your Academic Status has been changed to Good Academic Standing. If you are an admitted student to BYU-Idaho and your Academic Status is anything other than Good please call 208-496-1023 to have your status updated.

All students on Academic Probation prior to the new Academic Standing policy change maintain a maximum credit limit of 13 even though their Academic Standing was changed to Good. The restriction may remain in place until the student demonstrates academic success. If you have questions or concerns regarding a credit restriction, please meet with your Academic Advisor - Campus Students: (208) 496-1411, Online-only Students (208) 496-9900

A 2.0 is a "C" grade. A cumulative GPA is a "C" grade average. A "C" grade as defined in the BYU-Idaho Academic Catalog is a "sufficient understanding of subject matter". A student with less than 2.0 cumulative GPA would not have a sufficient understanding of what they have studied. Only students who have who have a sufficient understanding or greater of the subject matter they have studied will be awarded a BYU-Idaho degree.

If you were on Academic Suspension prior to the Spring Semester 2017 semester your Academic Status would have changed to Probation and then to Good Academic Standing as a result of the recent Academic Standards policy change.

If you were academically dismissed from BYU-Idaho prior to the 2017 Winter Semester and desire to attend BYU-Idaho, you have the option to petition your Academic Dismissal to the Academic Standards Committee.  Call 208-496-1023 to explore the option of filing a petition.

If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 it will not automatically put you on "Ineligible". You may be asked to meet with your Academic Advisor to create a plan for success.

All students currently attending BYU-Idaho should be on Good Academic Standing.  If your Academic Status is something other than "Good" please call 208-496-1023 so we can update your account.

If you are currently enrolled in ASM1, ASM2, or ASM3 please complete this course.  It takes 30 to 45 minutes and will only be removed from your I-learn once you complete it.

This new Academic Policy change may impact your Financial Aid.  Please contact the Financial Aid office at 208-496-1600 to determine your Financial Aid eligibility.

Depending on your situation you may need to meet with an Academic Advisor. You will be notified if it is required to meet with an Advisor.

A student who is "Ineligible" is restricted in the following manner:

  • not able to register for BYU-Idaho classes
  • not able to work in BYU-Idaho student employment
  • not able to live in BYU-I approved housing
  • not able to attend BYU-Idaho.
