Dance Attire Standards

To respect Church and University standards, the Dance Department asks dance students to live high standards of modesty. Students will find guidelines to help them understand what dance clothing is appropriate.

What to Wear

BYU-Idaho students dance in a ballet class.

Dance students are required to comply with the University dress code for all activities on campus, even dancewear. The Honor Code encourages neatness, cleanliness, and modesty.

In dance classes, students are allowed to wear comfortable clothes that facilitate the movement required. Modesty remains a priority; the midriff must remain covered at all times.

Appropriate footwear is required for dance, instructors will specify what footwear is needed for each class. Students are not allowed to wear classroom dancewear outside of the dance area.

On Campus

Students are not allowed to wear classroom dancewear outside of the dance area. When moving between classes on campus, students must change into street clothes or wear street clothes over dance attire.

Clogging

If you choose to wear shorts, they must reach below the knee in length. Hart approved athletic clothing is acceptable. Appropriate clogging shoes are required.

Contemporary/Jazz

Women: Proper and modest dance attire includes a tank, cap, or long sleeved leotard with a sports bra, and black pants that go below the knee. Soccer shirts, cut offs, or shorts are not allowed.

Men: Proper and modest dance attire includes a tight t-shirt, compression shorts, and dance pants that go below the knee. Soccer shirts, cut offs, or shorts are not allowed.

Ballroom

Women: Appropriate attire includes a skirt or dress pants.

Men: Dress pants or latin pants are allowed. Ballroom shoes are required for both men and women. Hart approved gym clothing is not acceptable for Ballroom courses.

Ballet

Women: Appropriate balletwear includes pink canvas-split sole ballet shoes, black round neck short sleeved or tank leotard, and pink tights with the opening for footed and for footless wearing.

For esthetic concerns, ladies must carefully consider their support bras so that the best possible line is presented during classes. Sweatpants, tops, jazz pants, leg-warmers, and sweater tops in any color are appropriate to cover up during down time. When practicing, only the leotard and tights layer can be worn to properly see the architecture of ballet as you perfect your practice.

Men: Appropriate balletwear includes white canvas split sole ballet shoes, white t-shirt, black mens tights, and black men's dance belt. The dance belt will provide you with proper carriage and esthetic body lines while in class and on stage. Basketball athletic supporters are not firm enough and do not give you handsome body lines. Dancers may cover up with sweatpants, tops, jazz pants, leg warmers, and sweater tops in any color. When practicing, only the t-shirt and tights layer can be worn to properly see the architecture of ballet as you perfect your practice.

World Dance
