Welcome to Services for Students with a Disability

We strive to ensure that students with disabilities have Access to achieve their academic goals.

The Disability Service Center provides services for classroom and other university related activities and operates at the request of any BYU-I student with qualifying disabilities. Students must provide the Center with written verification of their disability, issued by a qualified medical or psychological professional. This documentation should include evidence of testing, diagnosis, prognosis, and recommended accommodations. Upon meeting with the Center director, actual accommodations are determined on the basis of the verified disability and are provided in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. All contact with, and information supplied to the Center is kept strictly confidential. Additional information may be had by clicking on the headings under Topics above left.

Additional Information

• Persons who are deaf or hearing impaired need to contact our office Three months in advance of their attendance in order to ensure time to provide interpreters or other accommodations.
• Persons with access/assistive technology needs should also contact our office well in advance.

• Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic produces textbooks on tape for students who cannot effectively read standard print because of visual problems. Their address is 20 Roszel Road, Princeton, NJ 08540 and their telephone number is 1-800-772-3248. If you order your books on tape at least a month or more before you need them, they will be waiting for you when your classes start.

Academic Learning

Another useful resource for your academic pursuits is Academic Learning, located on the second floor of the East wing in the McKay Library. Academic Learning includes the following Centers:

• Reading Center: Provides placement, diagnostic testing ,and advising. Helps students improve basic reading skills through individual tutors. Teaches college reading skills and learning strategies and maintains an environment where students feel comfortable acquiring and practicing college reading skills and strategies.
• Writing Center: Gives students the chance to work with qualified, peer writing assistants to learn to appreciate writing as a central means of discovering what they think and why they think it. Writing assistants analyze student drafts to discern and teach principles of the writing/thinking process.
• Study Skills Center: Provides assistance to students in developing, or improving, more effective study techniques which will lead to a successful academic career.
• Tutoring Center: Offers free individual and group tutoring to all students who need help beyond their regular classroom instruction. Trained student tutors are available in a variety of subjects and are prepared to help students strengthen their academic background, understand class material and improve general learning and study skills.
• Math Study Center: Offers free tutoring to provide math support for all math students at BYU-Idaho by getting help at the Math Study Center Lab and /or by using a one-on-one tutor for individual help.
