Voice Ensembles

Join the choirs at BYU-Idaho! With 6-7 official ensembles, there is a choir for everyone, regardless of your initial singing ability! Our choirs perform regularly with professional artists; past guests have included the King's Singers, Bryan Stokes Mitchell, Frederica von Stade, and Adassa. BYU-Idaho choirs have also appeared on Music and the Spoken Word, at General Conference, at ACDA conferences, and on tour in the United States and internationally.

AUDITIONS are held 2-3 days before classes start each semester.

Opera Workshop is an auditioned ensemble at BYU–Idaho that provides students with immersive performance experience in opera and music drama. The course centers on the preparation and performance of staged operatic scenes, ranging from intimate solos and small ensembles to larger scenes featuring full chorus. Repertoire spans a wide variety of styles, including classical, romantic, and modern opera, allowing singers to develop both vocal technique and dramatic expression while exploring the richness of the operatic tradition.

Designed for developing and advanced singers, Opera Workshop emphasizes character development, stage presence, and collaborative performance skills in addition to vocal artistry. Students gain hands-on experience in acting, movement, and ensemble work as they bring scenes to life in performance. Each semester’s program is shaped by auditions, and periodically the workshop culminates in a fully staged opera production. Through this process, participants refine their musicianship, deepen their storytelling abilities, and share compelling performances that engage and inspire audiences.

Voice Lessons (Applied Voice) at BYU–Idaho offers personalized training for singers at every level—from beginners exploring their voice to advanced students pursuing professional-level study. Students can choose from a variety of options based on their goals, including private lessons for music majors, non-major lessons, and introductory or group-based experiences. All instruction is guided by experienced voice faculty and focuses on building healthy vocal technique, musicianship, and expressive performance skills in a supportive, growth-oriented environment.

For non-majors, voice study typically begins with an introductory course (MUS 104), followed by private or small-group lessons (MUS 158) as space allows. Music majors follow a structured sequence of progressively advanced private lessons that include weekly instruction, master classes, and performance opportunities such as juries and recitals. Across all levels, students develop vocal technique, language and diction skills, stage presence, and artistic expression while gaining confidence as performers. Whether pursuing a degree in music or simply a love of singing, voice lessons at BYU–Idaho provide meaningful opportunities for individual growth, musical excellence, and lifelong vocal development.
