Therapeutic Recreation Cohort Information & Application Process

We are so excited that you are choosing to pursue your degree in Therapeutic Recreation; below you will find information vital to the success of completing this program. Please take your time to review this information; any of the professors in Therapuetic Recreation would be happy to answer questions, as would, the CALS Advising center. 

A Few Reminders:

  • Please review all the requirements listed below.
  • Use your BYU–Idaho email address for every prompt.
  • If you have any questions, email Melissa Russell at russellm@byui.edu.

Application Process

  • Review your graduation plan and requirements with Academic Advising.
  • Declare Therapeutic Recreation as your major.
  • Follow us on social media:
  • You must complete RM 207 or RM 270 prior to or during the semester you apply.
    • Acceptance is conditional on earning C– or better in both RM 207 and RM 270 before the cohort start.
    • Fill out the cohort application (insert link)
      • Specify the cohort you are applying for.
  • Reminder: You will receive acceptance or denial via your BYU–Idaho email before the first day of registration for the corresponding semester.

    Note: Students will need to contact Admissions for track overrides. Expect to complete three consecutive semesters of courses.

    Application Deadline and Notification of Acceptance 

    • Deadline for application: Week 12 
    • Acceptance Notification: Week 14

If you believe you may need an exception, complete the application first, then submit the Exception Request Form with your explanation.

TR Cohort FAQs

You can schedule it, so they put their religion credits in an earlier semester.  You can also take an institute class that semester. If you choose to add an additional semester on, you have that option; the TR courses are what need to be enrolled in.
Exceptions to this are considered on an individual basis. Internships can be completed at a different semester after completion of the majority of coursework. 
Advising will change your track so you can attend school following the schedule.
