About Language and Letters Majors

The College of Language & Letters is home to ten majors and thirty one minors in the areas of Languages, Literature, Composition, History, Geography, International Studies, Political Science, Humanities, and Philosophy. In addition to these disciplines' content, students develop writing, reasoning, speaking, and critical thinking skills that transfer to a wide range of careers and graduate school programs.

Our graduates find employment in diverse sectors and matriculate into all types of graduate and professional programs. More fundamentally, students in the College of Language and Letters develop a spirit of curiosity and an intellectual skillset that enables them to be lifelong learners, regardless of their education or career paths.

Six of our majors and ten minors prepare students to certify as teachers at the secondary level. Consistently high Praxis exam pass rates and praiseworthy student teaching evaluations lead our education majors to success in finding employment and acceptance into graduate schools.

Department of English

Students learn to develop skills in reading, interpreting, and arguing about a variety of literary texts as well as developing tools to demonstrate deep learning and critical thinking.
As an English education major, you will focus on theories and methods for teaching literature and composition in the classroom. You also get to study an additional area of study in a selected minor. This will qualify you to teach in English and another area of study.
In the English Education Composite degree, the focus is to educate students in both classroom instruction and the English field. Students focus completely on English Education as their course of study. As a student in this degree, you will become certified to teach in grades 6-12, and you will deepen your learning in literature, language, and writing.

Department of Languages & International Studies

The International Studies major provides students with skills relevant to careers (or subsequent graduate studies) in international business, international economics, geographic information systems (GIS), and international policy-making and implementation. Students will also develop linguistic and international cultural competencies.
The Spanish Education major leads to a career in teaching Spanish in high school or junior high. Students will build on whatever proficiency they have in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish, adding to these cultural awareness and historical knowledge. Additionally, students will learn how to prepare, implement, and assess learning to ensure their effectiveness in the classroom.

Department of Humanities & Philosophy

The Humanities major is designed for students who want a broad liberal education and excellent preparation for professional schools such as law and medicine, for graduate programs in the humanities and other liberal arts, and for life as parents, citizens, and disciple leaders.
