In the music field, there is a debate about whether or not a graduate degree is necessary for long-term musical success.

Doubling, or being able to play multiple instruments, is a valuable skill for musicians. This talent is especially popular for performing artists, like theatre musicians, background musicians, and film musicians, because employers often value the versatility of playing multiple instruments.

In the BYU-Idaho music programs, you'll have many opportunities and access to helpful services to improve your music study. The Department of Music seeks to provide meaningful, portfolio-building experiences for students.

BYU-Idaho is home to a variety of choirs, ensembles, and bands. Woodwind, Brass, or Percussion majors are required to join an ensemble, but many choose to participate because ensembles offer extra practice and fun experiences.

You might know the BYU-Idaho choirs from their performances at General Conference, University Devotional, or on tour. BYUI actually hosts six different choirs on campus. Each choir focuses on different skills and music.

Each program in the Music Department has its own set of courses. Because each Music emphasis is specialized, there are unique trainings, lessons, and experiences for each instrument, including the voice.

Music can bring people together and invite a special spirit. To help with that, BYU-Idaho offers many experiences and amenities for Music majors. They can use these opportunities to develop their skills and share their talents.

When applying to the BYU-Idaho music program, you are required to complete an audition. This can be done both in person and online.

Remember that you’ll need to schedule your audition with the faculty member that’s listed on the specific instrument you choose. You’ll also need to decide whether to have a live audition or submit a video as your audition.

If you love dancing and want to continue performing in college, BYU-Idaho offers several exciting opportunities for students to grow as dancers and share their talents.

While a Dance major builds skills in performance, technique, and choreography, BYU-Idaho also offers opportunities to apply what you learn in real settings.
