Music can bring people together and invite a special spirit. To help with that, BYU-Idaho offers many experiences and amenities for Music majors. They can use these opportunities to develop their skills and share their talents.
Experiences
Some unique experiences in the BYUI Vocal Performance program include:
- Ensembles: There are six choirs on campus, consisting of five audition choirs and one open choir. To learn more about these groups, check out the article titled “Vocal Performance Ensembles at BYU-Idaho.”
- Operas: Students can participate in the opera programs, classes, or productions held throughout the school year. Vocal Performance majors can also take Music 317: Opera Workshop.
- Musicals: While these are not fully arranged by the Music Department, Vocal Performance majors can audition and perform in university productions. They can even earn credit for participating.
- Tours: Many ensembles go on tour to perform their repertoire throughout the world. Choirs most often perform in venues across the United States and Canada.
- Appearances on Music and the Spoken Word: In the past, BYUI choirs have worked with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square on the program Music and the Spoken Word.
- General Conference: University ensembles have performed in sessions of General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is a great way to learn how to share music in religious settings.
- Guest-Artist Collaborations: BYUI choirs regularly collaborate with world-renowned artists, like The King’s Singers, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Frederica von Stade, Adassa, and Jeremy Jordan.
- Europe Travel Study: The Department of Music offers a European Travel Study Program. Students can earn school credit while touring some amazing European cities. The program visits historical sites and attends concerts at famous concert venues.
Services Offered
Vocal Performance majors can utilize:
- One-on-One Voice Lessons: Vocal Performance majors have one-on-one voice lessons with experienced teachers and vocal coaches throughout each semester.
- Practice Rooms: The Eliza R. Snow Building, also known as the Music and Performing Arts building, has many practice rooms, including rooms with pianos and space for group practices. Many students utilize this space every day.
- Unique Performance Venues: Vocal Performance majors get to perform on multiple stages on campus. They perform at the BYU-Idaho Center, which holds 15,000 seats and often features world-class performers. They also commonly perform at the Barrus Concert Hall on campus.
- The Ruffatti Organ: In the Barrus Concert Hall, the university houses the Keith Martindale Stefan Memorial Organ, a world-class Ruffatti organ. This organ was custom-made for the Barrus Concert Hall and is regularly used in BYUI concerts.
