Auditions for Vocal Performance Majors

Want to join the BYU-Idaho Vocal Performance program? Acceptance into the program is done through auditions. While that may sound stressful, you have guidelines to help you out. Here are the general requirements and some tips to help you along.

The Department of Music also offers merit scholarships for incoming and transfer students. The application for program admission and scholarships is similar. They both hold auditions, but the scholarship audition is a little more thorough.

Major Auditions

As a reminder, students must be admitted to the university before they can be accepted into the Vocal Performance major. Applying to BYU-Idaho is the first step in the audition process.
Requirements for program auditions, separate from scholarship auditions, are:

Submit a video submission or schedule a live audition, the earlier the better. Early submissions are given priority for getting into starting courses, especially Music 155 (Intro to Vocal Methods).
Sing a memorized song, in any language, that demonstrates your voice at its best. This song must be a solo classical art song or opera aria.
Have an understanding of vocal production for the best chance of acceptance.

If you are unable to submit materials prior to the semester starting, you will be given a live audition opportunity once the semester begins. If this is the case, please contact the Department of Music for more information.

Scholarship Auditions

This audition can qualify you for both admission into the major as well as the scholarship program. This audition is best done by video, but a live audition can be scheduled as well.

Submitting an audition will determine if you qualify for a merit-based scholarship. The priority deadline is on February 1^st of each year; submitting before this deadline is recommended as resources may be limited.

The requirements for this audition are:

Sing 2 to 3 selections, lasting a total of 8 to 10 minutes.
Song selections should be solo classical art songs and/or opera arias that demonstrate multiple styles, moods, and tempos.
At least one piece should be in a foreign language (typically Italian, German, or French).
Sing your best piece first. Vocalizes may be added to the end of the audition, if you feel it is necessary to best demonstrate your range.

Tips for Success

Want to know how to put your best foot forward in auditions? Here are some tips for success in the admissions process:

Submit early (the priority deadline is February 1^st), especially for scholarship submissions.
Choose pieces that demonstrate your range and expertise.
Ensure your pieces are memorized and practiced. Private vocal training is not required but is recommended.
Be prepared with alternative course choices. Due to limited space in the Vocal Performance courses, classes may not be available in the semester you apply.
Once you’re accepted into the program, meet with the Performing and Visual Arts: Music Advising Center. They can help you stay on track in your major.
