Internship Approval

The process of finding an internship and getting it approved by a faculty internship coordinator.

I-Plan Internship Registration Process

Step 1: Student – Getting Started

Find an Internship:

  • Choose a position related to your major.
  • You can find internships using Handshake or you can request a past internship list from the Career Center.

Complete the Internship Approval Form on I-Plan:

  • Log in using your church login.
  • Click “Internship Approval.”
  • Select “Create an Internship Request.”
  • Fill out all required fields and click Submit at the bottom.

After submitting:

  • Your request goes to your Faculty Internship Coordinator for review.
  • If you’re an on-campus internation student, it will also be sent to the International Office.
  • An email is sent to your Experience Provider asking them to accept the Master Internship Agreement.
  • You can track your approval status anytime by accessing your application on I-Plan.

Step 2: Faculty Internship Coordinator – Academic Approval

  • Reviews your request and may ask for more details about your internship.
  • Approves your internship through I-Plan.
  • You will get an email letting you know when they have approved it.
  • It can take up to 2 weeks for them to approve it, so plan ahead.

Step 3: Experience Provider – Employer Approval

  • Reviews and accept the BYU-Idaho Master Agreement.
  • If they have hosted BYU-Idaho interns in the past 3 years, they will not be required to do sign it again.

Step 4: International Office (If Applicable)

  • For on-campus international students only.
  • Reviews your internship and may contact you for additional information.
  • Make sure that you have a job offer letter attached to the application and that the internship dates on the letter match the dates you put on the application.

Step 5: Student – Final Step

  • Once you receive all approval emails and your application say “Authorized,” go to your student portal, and register for the internship course.

*Internship credits are exempt from tuition charges. However, an administrative fee equal to one credit hour at the current rate of tuition will be charged for an internship course. The fee is in addition to any tuition charges for other classes. Fees are charged independently of tuition and are not subject to the 12-credit tuition cap.

*Online students are not eligible to receive the tuition discount if an internship course is taken concurrently with other online courses during the same semester. To retain the tuition discount, students must enroll in either the internship course or online coursework in a separate semester, but not both at the same time.

Credit for Prior Learning

New policy for Summer Session: Students who are completing an internship during the summer break or outside the semester starting Summer 2026.

If you are planning to complete an internship during summer break or cannot meet the hourly/weekly requirements in one semester, you are still required to go through the internship approval process before beginning your internship. Follow the steps to ensure your experience is eligible for credit.

  1. IPlan Application: You are required to submit an internship application via IPlan.
  2. Internship Semester: You will select the current year and “Cross Semester” when filling out your application. This will alert your Faculty Internship Coordinator that you are applying for an internship experience outside of a traditional semester.
  3. Faculty Approval: Your application must be officially approved by your Faculty Internship Coordinator.
  4. Master Agreement: Your employer may receive an email asking them to sign our Master Agreement. If they have hosted previous BYUI students, they will not need to sign the agreement again.
  5. Approved Application: Once your internship application has been approved and the agreement signed, you may begin your internship experience.
  6. CPL Credit: You will apply for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) at the conclusion of your internship to receive formal academic credit for your experience which will show on your degree audit as a pass/fail grade. Complete the CPL application. There will not be an internship course to register for.

Please reach out to your Faculty Internship Coordinator to verify that they will accept CPL in place of the internship course. International students need to reach out to the International Office to make sure that you are meeting federal requirements.
