Travel Study Requirements
Students must complete either an Internship (Art 498) or a Travel Study (Art 395) course to graduate. If you're planning to fulfill this requirement with a travel study class, carefully read the details below.
Why Travel Study?
Visiting important art locations in person can be a powerful and inspiring part of your education. The Art Department includes a travel study course in each degree so students can experience significant works of art first-hand.
Exception Requests
If you cannot travel with one of the official groups due to special circumstances, you may request an exception.

Examples of acceptable reasons:
- You’re already planning to visit a major art city with your family.
- You have a medical condition that makes group travel difficult.
Exceptions are not granted for:
- Class schedule conflicts
- Financial concerns
- Personal convenience
If your request is approved, independent travel is still required—you will complete the experience on your own.
How to Request an Exception
To request an exception, contact David Belka. Your request will be reviewed with the Art Department Chair. If approved, you’ll receive instructions on how to complete the course and earn credit.
