Travel Study Requirements

Students are required to either do an Internship (Art 498) or Travel Study (Art 395). If you need to take a travel study class to fulfill your graduation plan, please carefully read the following information:

Traveling to a location to study significant art works in person can be a very inspiring part of your education. The Department of Art has included a travel study course into the art degrees so that students will have an opportunity to have first-hand experience with significant art sites.

Options for travel for Spring 2024 semester and the associated class fees that are assessed with tuition will be as follows:

Art 395A-01: Salt Lake City, UT ($250 class fee) - Brother Keller

Art 395A-02: Salt Lake City, UT ($250 class fee) - Brother Franson

The way the classes work is students usually meet two or three times early in the semester to prepare for travel and begin some of the required academic work for the class. The travel happens later in the semester and is scheduled for a Wednesday through Sunday. This minimizes the amount of class time you are away from campus.

For more information or details about each of these trips, please contact the Art Office or contact the instructor of the course listed in the class schedule.

If you are unable to travel with one of the Art Department groups because of some extenuating circumstance, we do have an accommodation for these types of situations. In rare cases, exceptions to going on one of the Art Department trips are granted.

Examples of exceptions might be that you are planning to travel to a location on your own or with your family where you can see major art museums or you have a medical or physical concern that would make it difficult to travel in a vehicle with a group for an extended period of time.

Exceptions are generally not granted for class schedule conflicts, financial concerns, or reasons of convenience.

If a student is granted an exception, the travel will still be required, it is just done independently from an Art Department group.

Anyone requesting an exception to traveling with an Art Department group should contact David Belka. Requests will be reviewed with the Art Department Chair to determine if an exception should be granted. If an exception is granted, we will give out more information about how to get credit for the experience.
