Health Center Services

BYU-Idaho's Health Center provides students primary healthcare. This service includes pharmacy, radiology, immunizations, laboratory testing, tuberculosis tests, and after-hours services.

Our Health Center is staffed by Physicians, Mid-Levels (Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners), and Registered Nurses. All are trained in primary care medicine. Our goal is to provide the primary care support you need to succeed in your studies. We care for the most common conditions and will assist with referrals to specialists or to the emergency room as needed. We do not intend to replace the care from your home physician but strive to support that care when possible at a primary care level. We are proud of our selection to be a teaching facility and our providers may be accompanied by students.

The Student Health Center and Pharmacy accept private insurance and the Pharmacy can bill most private insurance plans.

If you are an eligible patient of the Student Health Center and would like to fill your prescription, visit us at the Student Health Center.

The Pharmacy accepts all valid out-of-state prescriptions. The prescriptions can be sent to the Pharmacy from out-of-state providers, as well as providers locally from outside the Student Health Center.

The Pharmacy can easily transfer prescriptions from other pharmacies both in and out of state. Please contact the pharmacy at 208-496-9330 option 2 to start this process.

The Pharmacy also carries a variety of over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and wellness items available for purchase.

Who Needs a TB Test?

  • All students returning home from a mission – including stateside missions—may be at risk.
  • All students who have traveled outside of the US since their last TB test
  • Students born outside of the US and/or have had the BCG vaccine
  • Students who may have been in close contact with someone who has had TB
  • Those who have had positive TB skin tests in the past and/or have been advised to consider medication for TB

The Testing Process for At-Risk Students

  1. A skin test (Mantoux test) is performed, where a small amount of fluid (tuberculin or PPD) is injected under the skin on the arm. A follow-up on the site is observed for signs of reaction after 48-72 hours.
  2. If the skin test is positive, the student will need to receive a blood test— QuantiFERON-Gold or T-spot. A chest X-ray does NOT replace a blood test.
  3. If the blood test is positive, the student will meet with a Provider at the Student Health Center to evaluate the condition.

How is TB Transmitted?

TB, a potentially fatal bacterial infection, is transmitted person to person through tiny air droplets. Someone with Active TB spreads TB by coughing, sneezing, speaking, or singing when others are nearby.

What are the Symptoms?

Latent TB has no active signs or symptoms, is not contagious, and can only be detected by a blood test. People with Active TB can experience body aches, fever, weight loss, night sweats, chills, loss of appetite, fatigue, coughing blood, or intense coughing lasting more than three weeks.
