Health Center Services

BYU-Idaho's Health Center provides students primary healthcare. This service includes pharmacy, radiology, immunizations, laboratory testing, tuberculosis tests, and after-hours services.

Our Health Center is staffed by Physicians, Mid-Levels (Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners), and Registered Nurses. All are trained in primary care medicine. Our goal is to provide the primary care support you need to succeed in your studies. We care for the most common conditions and will assist with referrals to specialists or to the emergency room as needed. We do not intend to replace the care from your home physician but strive to support that care when possible at a primary care level. We are proud of our selection to be a teaching facility and our providers may be accompanied by students.

The Student Health Center and Pharmacy accept private insurance and the Pharmacy can bill most private insurance plans.

If you are an eligible patient of the Student Health Center and would like to fill your prescription, visit us at the Student Health Center.

The Pharmacy accepts all valid out-of-state prescriptions. The prescriptions can be sent to the Pharmacy from out-of-state providers, as well as providers locally from outside the Student Health Center.

The Pharmacy can easily transfer prescriptions from other pharmacies both in and out of state. Please contact the pharmacy at (208) 496-9330 and select option 2 to start this process.

The Pharmacy also carries a variety of over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and wellness items available for purchase.

Monday 8:00am – 4:00pm
Tuesday 8:00am – 11:00am, 12:30pm – 4:00pm
Wednesday 8:00am – 4:00pm
Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm

Call 208-496-9330 to schedule an appointment.

Who should consider receiving a TB Test?

  • All students returning home from a mission–including stateside missions · Students who have traveled outside of the United States and Canada to a high incidence country (testing should be performed at least 6 wks. from exposure and have not had a TB test since traveling from this country, confirm they have not received the BCG vaccine) · Students born outside of the United States and Canada in a high incidence country (testing should be performed at least 6 wks. from exposure and have not had a TB test since traveling from this country, confirm they have not received the BCG vaccine)
  • Students who may have been in close contact with someone who has had/does have active TB (please wait 6 wks. from exposure for testing)
  • Those who have had positive TB skin tests over a year ago and/or have been advised to consider medication for TB
  • Students who work in places where TB is more likely to spread, such as hospitals, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, and nursing homes
  • Students who are at high risk for TB and show symptoms

The Testing Process for At-Risk Students

  1. A skin test (Mantoux test) is performed, where a small amount of fluid (tuberculin or PPD) is injected under the skin on the arm. A follow-up on the site is observed for signs of reaction after 48-72 hours.

    • When should a TB skin test be skipped and blood testing be performed instead?
    1. If patient has received the BCG vaccine (can cause false positive tb skin tests)
    2. If the patient has had a positive TB skin test in the past and/or have been advised to consider medication for TB
  2. If the skin test is positive, the student will need to receive a blood test— QuantiFERON-Gold or T-spot. A chest X-ray does NOT replace a blood test.
  3. If the blood test is positive, the student should meet with a medical provider at the Student Health Center, or other external provider to evaluate the condition.

How is TB Transmitted?

TB, a potentially fatal bacterial infection, is transmitted person to person through tiny air droplets. Someone with Active TB spreads TB by coughing, sneezing, speaking, or singing while others are nearby.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of active TB disease include:

  • A cough that lasts three weeks or longer
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Night sweats

People with inactive TB do not have symptoms. However, without treatment, they can develop active TB disease and become sick.

If you have received a negative TB test in the last year you can send results to:

*Be aware if you fax results when the Student Health Center is closed, we won’t receive them. This includes holidays and school breaks. If you have any further questions, email healthcenterpublichealth@byui.edu, or call 208-496-9330 to talk with the Public Health Coordinators.

If you are experiencing an emergency, immediately dial 911.

An emergency generally involves breathing difficulty, severe bleeding, significant chest pain, and stroke symptoms (paralysis, slurred speech, disorientation, etc....).
