BYU-Idaho policy states that operators of all University motorized vehicles and equipment are required to have both:

  • a current state/international driver’s license
  • a BYU-Idaho Driving Permit

How to Obtain a BYU_Idaho Driving Permit

In order to operate any vehicle, the driver must complete the online Defensive Driving Course and carry a valid university permit (application form). This form needs to be completed and signed by your supervisor or department head.

Different vehicles may require additional testing or training.

Trucks, Minivans, Sedans

  1. Complete the Defensive Driving Course.
  2. Complete the drivers permit application form.
  3. Then bring your driver’s license and signed application form to Fleet Services.

12-Passenger Vans

  1. Complete the Defensive Driving Course.
  2. Complete the drivers permit application form.
  3. Complete a 30 minute, behind-the-wheel test. Contact Fleet Services at (208) 496-2561.

Behind the wheel tests are given Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. At that time, please bring your driver’s license and signed drivers permit application form.

Gators/Carts

  1. Complete the Defensive Driving Course.
  2. Complete the drivers permit application form.
  3. Complete a behind-the-wheel test. Request "training for gators" from the Safety Office (call 208-496-3053).
  4. Bring your driver’s license and drivers permit application form to Fleet Services (FMS 145A).
