Make sure you’re in the right classes when you start school at BYU-Idaho.

Welcome to Academic Placement & Transition

Welcome to BYU-Idaho! You've been admitted to the university, and now you're ready to plan and register for courses. The following information on Academic Placement & Transition will make this process easier and help you find the courses that are best for you.

Many courses don’t have any requirements to meet before you take them, but some of the essential General Education courses do. Math 108X and ENG 150 are the biggest ones. Find out if you're ready to register for these classes or still need to meet the requirements:

English 150: Writing and Reasoning Foundations (General Education English Course)
To register for ENG 150, you must meet one of the following requirements:

National Test Scores to get into ENG 150
  • ACT English score of 17 or higher
  • SAT Reading and Writing Section score of 400 or higher (before 2016 – SAT writing score of 430)
Scores on BYU-Idaho Placement Exams 
Transition Courses as prerequisites 
  • Pass English 106 with a C or better

Math 108X: Math for the Real World (General Education Math Course)
To register for Math 108X, you must meet one of the following requirements:

National Test Scores to get into Math 108X 
  • ACT math score of 18 or higher
  • SAT math score of 470 or higher (before 2016 – SAT math score of 430)
Scores on BYU-Idaho Placement Exams 
Transition Courses as prerequisites
  • Pass Math 100B: Beginning Algebra witha C or higher
  • Successfully completed Pathway Connect

Advance Placement or Transfer Credits

You may have taken AP or concurrent enrollment courses that replace these two courses. If you have, submit those transcripts to transcriptsubmit@byui.edu. The Transfer Evaluation Self-Help Tool is a great resource as well as the Advanced Placement (AP) Information website.

If you are waiting for your AP or transfer credit in math to be sent or evaluated and are prevented from registering for your next math class, please contact the Math Department at mathematics@byui.edu or 208-496-7520 for help.

Academic Transitions Program

Need a little help transitioning into BYU-I? The Academic Transitions Program is here for your success. It is composed of carefully designed math, English, and college success courses (listed below) to help bridge the gaps that many students have when entering BYU-I for the first time.

The classes in the program count towards graduation. The class size for these courses is kept to 25 students. Each class is taught by highly nurturing and qualified faculty members with expertise in their fields. The math and English courses also use tutors to provide everyone with support and guidance.

Taking courses in this program can help you find confidence in your academic abilities. Focus on your success with the Academic Transitions Program.
