Welcome to BYU-Idaho! You have been admitted to the university, and you are now ready to plan and register for courses. The following information will help make this process easier and give you direction on the courses that can best help you transition into college.
Placement
While you can register for many first-year courses, a few have requirements that must be met before you can register for them. Here is a list of those courses and their requirements.
English 150: Writing and Reasoning Foundations (Freshman English Course)
- ACT English score of 16 or greater
- SAT writing score of 23 or 390 on the read/write
- Take and pass the Basic Writing Exam with an 80% or higher
- Register and pass English 106:Basic Writing with a C or higher
- Register and pass English 109: English Language Development – Writing with a B or higher
- Successfully completed Pathway Connect

Math 108X: Math for the Real World (Freshman Math Course)
- ACT math score of 18 or higher
- SAT math score of 470 or higher (before 2016 – SAT math score of 430)
- Pass the ALEKS Math Placement Exam with a score of 38 or higher
- Register and pass Math 100B: Beginning Algebra with a C or higher
- Register and pass Math 101: Intermediate Algebra with a C or higher
- Successfully completed Pathway Connect

Advanced Placement or Transfer Credits
You may have taken AP or concurrent enrollment courses that could allow you to bypass these two courses. If you have, you will want to submit those transcripts to transcriptsubmit@byui.edu. The Transfer Evaluation Self-Help Tool is a great resource as well as the Advanced Placement (AP) Information website.
If waiting for your AP or transfer credit in math to be sent or evaluated and it you are being prevented from registering for your next math class, please contact the Math Department at mathematics@byui.edu or (208) 496-7521 for help.
Transitions
The Academic Transitions Program is based on the belief that all admitted students can succeed. It is composed of carefully designed math, English, and college success courses (listed below) to help bridge the gaps that many students have when entering BYU-Idaho for the first time. The classes in the program are fully matriculated, and the credits count towards graduation. The class size for courses in the program are kept to 25 students and are taught by highly nurturing and qualified faculty members with expertise in their fields. In addition to individual attention given by the faculty, the math and English courses use embedded tutors to provide students additional support and guidance.
Taking courses in this program can help any student and focus on assisting students in finding confidence in their academic abilities. Courses listed below with an * indicate that the course is a prerequisite or meets a general education requirement.
