The BYU-Idaho Symphony Band is a select group of 47 woodwind, brass and percussion students who perform significant wind literature from a variety of musical periods and styles. Under near professional conditions, this distinctive group of instrumentalists present premiers of original works for band, orchestral transcriptions, solo concertos and popular music. The Symphony Band draws on compositions from such composers as Bach, Mozart, Berlioz, Sousa, and Copland. The repertoire also includes selections of standard band literature by prominent twentieth century composers. Members are selected each semester after careful audition to determine not only technical skill, but the ability to communicate feeling through their performance. These dedicated musicians bring years of previous experience to the ensemble and represent what is best in the students at BYU-Idaho. The ensemble travels on both domestic and international concert tours, performing for public schools, universities, communities, and invitational conferences sponsored by state, national and professional organizations.
