The Rexburg Animal Shelter, operated by the Rexburg Police Department, recently went to Carriage Cove Short Term Rehabilitation Center with two dogs to help brighten the day of patients. Animal Control Officers Scott Chapman and Holly Wolfley visited the care facility where they say they had great success.
"We haven't taken (animals) to any of the homes like that, but I thought it'd be a good opportunity to do something different. It was a fun time,” Chapman said.
Chapman says the patients had a great time with the dogs and he hopes to do it again with other facilities in the future. The idea came from employees at Carriage Cove.
Chapman and Wolfley urge the community to take care of their pets. The animal shelter does take surrendered animals. However, they ask people to understand that when they adopt an animal it’s a big decision because the relationship will last the life of the animal.
Adoption rates are $125 - $195 for dogs, depending on weight, and $95 for cats. The cost to surrender an animal is $65 for dogs and $30 for cats and is only available for residents of Rexburg.
“I think one thing to keep in mind is it's called a shelter because we take really good care of them. Like some of those dogs, unfortunate as it is, like we are their home for now, at least we hope they go somewhere else. I think it's just something to think when you go there, don't be sad, like because they're getting taken care of pretty good and eventually they're going to get a good home,” Wolfley said.
The shelter is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 400 N 5th West near the Nature Park. You can also call them at 208-359-3005.
