The Armchair Traveler Challenge is a book reading challenge at the Madison Library District. It encourages readers to read books that fit into different challenges throughout the year.

The theme for the challenge is the Artist Apprenticeship Edition with prizes like stickers that were inspired by the most famous artists of different eras. This is directly correlated with the Summer Reading Challenge’s theme: “Color Your World.”

“My favorite experience was just being able to read a book and then realize, ‘Oh, I can count this book and go get my sticker,’” said Mary Ann Kirkpatrick, one of the librarians at Madison Library District.

The challenges, according to Kirkpatrick, are labeled by ages with the main challenge coming in for ages 15 or over. The junior challenge is for ages 10 to 14.

“You can count stuff both for the Armchair Traveler Challenge and for summer reading so they can overlap their reading,” Kirkpatrick said. “They don't have to read separate books for each challenge. And, it just encourages people to read more because they can get even more prizes from our amazing sponsors that way.”
