A new company has opened in Rexburg and Rigby and it could make a big difference in education. Kevin Gage and his wife, Mariah, were homeschooling their children in California eight years ago. Kevin came to the conclusion that learning needed to be fun for the children for the lessons to make a greater impact, and that’s how Homeschool in a Box was born.
Since moving to eastern Idaho, they have set up shop in Rexburg and Rigby, determined to make homeschooling an adventure for the students and to ease educational burdens for parents.
Kevin says they tried to make the business work in California, but could only afford to hire people, usually teenagers, for $15 an hour, which is California’s minimum wage.
“One of the problems with paying people minimum wage is you get minimum effort,” Kevin said. “I like to pay people more than that, but they have to bring in more than that. And by moving to Idaho allowed us to do that.”
Kevin says they sell different kits like homeschool in a box, missionary boxes, day and night book boxes and more, each focusing on unit studies and an activity or craft to reinforce what the students are learning. He says, “Education is endless.” On top of that, the kits are ready for pickup.
“We're just a very different type of company,” he said. “So, we do have a lot of challenges, and we just do things differently that nobody else has because we didn't grow up in the industry. So, we didn't know what the rules were, what the norms are. So, we just created our own norms, which quite frankly aren't very normal, but that's okay.”
Home School in a Box has locations at 119 E. Main St. in Rexburg and 129 Main St. in Rigby. While the location in Rigby is more developed, they are looking for more opportunities in Idaho. To find out more about them or to buy a kit from them, you can click here.
