Highland High School in Pocatello began reconstruction with a groundbreaking on March 19, with phase one being complete in 2027.

Highland suffered a massive fire two years ago that took out the band and choir rooms, gymnasium and cafeteria. In this reconstruction, not only will these rooms be replaced but also a new auditorium that can seat 850 people.

Principal Brad Wallace says since the fire the high school has become safer than it has ever been.

“It's had a lot of eyes of professional construction companies that have been in here,” Wallace said. “We're an amazing school and there's some excitement about what's to come and we're excited about that.”

There will be two phases of construction that will focus on different areas in the school. The first phase will focus on the gym, wrestling room and weight room. It will open on January 1, 2027. The second phase will focus on the auditorium, band room, choir room and drama room and is estimated to open in the fall of 2027.

Students will continue to attend the high school during the construction, just as they have since the fire.

“There's been a lot of flexibility and support from not only our school district community, or the other high schools in our district, and other schools in general,” Wallace said.
