Since 2018, the Giving Cupboard in Rigby has helped people obtain food security in Jefferson County. Volunteers run donation drives to get all kinds of food like frozen meals, fresh produce to canned and nonperishable foodstuffs.
“We try to help, and it takes more than just food to complete the to complete the person,” said Cheryl Hively, one of the volunteers. “Clean homes and healthy bodies and healthy babies are what we're all about.”
Hively says that less than five years ago, the Giving Cupboard helped fewer than 400 households in Rigby and Jefferson County and now, they serve between 800 and 900 households. Not only do they take in foodstuffs, they also accept cleaning supplies, baby diapers and other essential non-food items.
“There was one client, it's been a couple of years, that was finally able to no longer need us and came in and told us how grateful that we were here for them when they needed us the most,” Hively said. “And now that they were doing well and they've actually come back and volunteered for us.”
The Giving Cupboard currently helps people from Bonneville to Fremont counties as well. They also operate a mobile food pantry that travels to the Mud Lake area twice a month. If you want to help, they are open every Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at their main location at 153 North 3900 East in Rigby.
