Currently, Rexburg has three grocery stores, Broulim’s, Albertson’s and Walmart. Soon, WinCo Foods will join that list.
Scott Johnson is the city of Rexburg’s economic development director. He’s in charge of the growth of the city and encourages businesses to come and do work here.
City Councilman Robert Chambers announced WinCo Food will come to Rexburg during his state of the city address Tuesday at BYU-Idaho.
In an interview with Brandon Isle, Scott Johnson said the announcement comes after months and even years of work behind the scenes, which can get frustrating for people who look forward to seeing new businesses in town.
"I know our citizens get excited and then get frustrated and then excited again,” Johnson said. "But WinCo has actually submitted plans. I worked with them throughout the process. ... And so, we're excited to have them. We think they'll be a great addition to the city.”
According to Johnson, it will be located just south of Walmart on the opposite side of Moody Rd. and construction is expected to start in the spring.
The city is also working on other projects like building a new airport by 2033, renovating the Rexburg Tabernacle Civic Center, connecting the city to fiber and redeveloping downtown.
“It'll be a very, very large project,” Johnson said.
