BYU-Idaho has worked to be inclusive for all those who suffer from mental and physical disabilities, giving these people a chance to be themselves and achieve excellence in all things.
For those who like sports but are unable to participate actively, the Department of Human Performance and Recreation has a program where anyone can play regardless of physical ability.
These Adaptive Sports are a great way to de-stress and make new friends while making memories that can last a lifetime.
These events are on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Hart Building’s Main or Auxiliary Gyms, rooms 250 or 210 until July 19. They then will start up for the Fall semester every Tuesday and Friday starting on Sept. 17 at the same time and place.
"We have a lot of different sports that we offer, wheelchair basketball is one that we do a lot of," said Tyler Dustin, a professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Human Performance and Recreation. "This semester, we’ve been introducing a lot of new ones.
Some of the new events include sit volleyball, goalball, chair yoga and adaptive track and field events.
"The hope is to that way like reach people with like a broader interest, just more people that perhaps maybe if you’re not interested every week that there’s other options," said Alden J. Apedaile, a student coordinator for Adaptive Sports.
