BYU-Idaho has a new project-based experiential learning program where students get the experience they need for the careers they want to have in the future.
“Our hope is that we will start to see this grow and impact more students across different colleges,” said Thomas Mecham, the Career Employment manager in the BYU-Idaho Career Center.
Mecham says the project-based internship class started in the fall of 2023. Previous to this, the projects were done under a third party. The purpose is to make students more likely to find a career by complementing and placing better marks on a resume.
How it works is a company provides a project for students enrolled in the class. The students complete the project on campus without having to leave Rexburg. The students work in teams of five and complete the project within one semester. It gives them real job experience and helps businesses complete projects.
"I think that this is a great opportunity for younger college students to maybe filter out some of those babysitting positions or filter out some of those early career development positions that aren't as relevant to what you're trying to pursue long term in your career,” Mecham said.
One can register for this course when registration happen under the registration code BUS 297R. Thomas Mecham’s counterpart, Steven Rademacher, is the main teacher for that course according to Mecham.
