Taxes are hard enough and can be a little scary for students doing them on their own for the first time. Here at BYU-Idaho, there is a Volunteer Tax Review Center where people can get free help on getting their taxes finished and filed.
Students who use the free help can also file their taxes for free. Federal returns are always free, but the Help Center has coupons for students to also file their state of Idaho taxes for free.
“So, they can file their taxes completely for free and get help from students if they have any questions or have any snags with their tax return,” said Patrick Walsh, an Accounting Department professor who helps run the Help Center.
Walsh says the service is helped by freetaxusa.com and operated by students who have taken a tax class and have relevant ability to help. The students do not do the taxes for other people. They are there to help as needed.
“They should start on their own to try to do it and then bring any tax documents they have if the volunteer has questions about it. So, like the W-2 or the 1098-T for education expenses or any 1099 they received, any tax form they've received,” Walsh said.
The center is open Monday through Friday 3 - 5 p.m. at the Joseph F. Smith Building, room 448 until April 3.
