After earning his bachelor of music in organ performance from BYU-Idaho this semester, David Djambov will head to Indiana to begin the University of Notre Dame's master of sacred music program. There he will focus on organ performance while studying sacred music history, analysis, and liturgy.
Djambov will also serve as a graduate assistant organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, which serves as Notre Dame’s university church and houses a 5,194-pipe organ. There, he will provide music for Mass and accompany choirs.
Djambov credits much of his success to BYU-Idaho’s music faculty, especially Music Department Chair Daniel Kerr, who oversees the university’s organ program.
“I think my interest in sacred music I can attribute to Dr. Kerr,” Djambov said. “He’s got a vast library and vast wealth of knowledge … I think that put me on the trajectory that I’m on, both in terms of my technical musical ability, but also the passion I have for sacred music.”
In addition to teaching Djambov in classes and private organ lessons, Kerr hired him as an assistant in the Music Department. The role gave Djambov opportunities to work with faculty and observe how they mentored students.
“The Music Department has first-rate professors and a great curriculum that will hone any musician’s skills,” Djambov said.
Completing a music degree in organ performance required Djambov to balance demanding coursework and practice with responsibilities at home. As he and his wife welcomed their first child, he learned to rely on his faith, prioritize what mattered most, and accept support from understanding faculty members.
“The Lord makes it all work,” Djambov said. “I was also so grateful to my professors who were working with me and understanding my circumstances.”
Before leaving for Notre Dame, Djambov encouraged other students to build relationships with BYU-Idaho faculty and take advantage of the university’s academic resources.
“We have such a wealth of resources, thanks to the incredible faculty,” Djambov said. “We’re very blessed to have beautiful opportunities, particularly in the realm of academics and education. There’s no ceiling to how much you can learn and how prepared you can be to move forward with either your career or education."
