Laptops in Engineering Courses
Engineers often use computer software to aid them in their profession. In preparation for future work, several engineering courses require students to use a specified software package during class in order to meet course outcomes.

Students are expected to have their own laptop for use during class in the following courses* :
ME 142 - Engineering Computation I
ME 162 - Fundamentals of 2D CADD
ME 172 - Engineering Graphics
ME 201 - Engineering Mechanics: Statics
ME 305 - Mechatronics and Measurement Systems I
ME 310 - Mechatronics and Measurement Systems II
ME 342 - Engineering Computation II
ME 410 - System Dynamics
ME 425 - Computational Fluid Dynamics
ME 460 - Fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis
*Please note that exceptions to the laptop policy above must be approved in advance by the faculty member teaching the specific class. In some limited cases, with faculty approval, it may be possible to use a campus computer lab or home desktop computer in place of a laptop.
Recommended Calculators
Engineers frequently perform calculations. While computer software can handle complex computations, quick calculations are often easier and faster with a hand calculator, especially when a computer isn't available.
To help you prepare for the FE exam, you will be limited on what calculator you can use in some engineering courses. It is recommended that you purchase one of the following calculators:
- TI-36X Pro Scientific (Recommended)
- TI-30X
- Casio fx-115
- Casio fx-991
The University Help Desk can help students understand the hardware requirements and various options and costs associated with installing a Windows operating system on a Mac. Please note that most of the software problems encountered in class come from students who are using a Mac with a Windows operating system.
