The fall months are among Idaho’s most popular big game hunting seasons.
While hunters love their time in the backcountry, it’s common for hunters to get lost while exploring. Fortunately, most of the time they find their way back to safety. No matter how experienced the hunter, you never know when you’ll be in a dangerous situation.
Connor Jay Liess, an Idaho Fish and Game public information specialist, outlined some of the best survival tips in a recent news release.
He noted that during this time of year, as the weather starts to get colder “things can go south really quick.”
Some of the tips include:
- tell someone your plans and set a time when you check in with them
- watch for extreme weather changes
- carry extra food and clothing
- learn how to build a fire
and
- pack a flashlight with extra batteries.
Leiss’s number one tip is “knowing exactly or having researched where you're going to be hunting.”
Another tip from Liess includes not relying on electronics, “with a lot of technology, it can fail pretty quickly. sometimes batteries will deplete,” he said. “So having a backup plan or just knowing where you're going to be and not relying on electronics is a good way to go.”
