The Theater and Dance Program at BYU-Idaho is a place where students can not only perform and perfect their craft but also become disciples of Jesus Christ while uplifting students and building community. In this episode of the Fulfilling the Mission podcast, Theater and Dance Chair Ashley Storm and Theatre Education major senior, Anne Marie Larson, share with us how their program blesses their life and students here on campus.
Storm, who grew up in eastern Idaho, studied at Ricks College, Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. When she was first a student, she was unsure of a dance career. But after trying other majors, she went back to where she felt most at home.
“I have always had a passion for it, and the Lord has really opened those doors for me,” Storm said.
She explained that she has toured all over the country, taught at BYU, UVU, U of U, and been at BYU-Idaho for the last 16 years.
Larson first found her passion in the 6th grade during her first-ever performance. In high school, she discovered that Theatre Education was an option for her. She loves the idea of being able to help people achieve their goals while staying involved in the arts.
“I love the opportunity to interact with people and to create beautiful messages that can bless the community,” Larson said.
Both emphasized the department’s student-focused mentoring and inclusive atmosphere. Even students not cast in productions are encouraged to get involved through technical work, stage management or coaching.
The department is uniquely positioned to help BYU–Idaho fulfill its mission of developing disciples of Jesus Christ.
“We’re intentional about inviting the Spirit into our craft,” Storm said. “Because of the outward-facing nature of what we do, we not only build testimonies for ourselves and our students but also uplift the entire campus.”
Larson concluded with, “At BYU–Idaho, I feel the Spirit while pursuing my passion.”
