The Straw Maze: The Scarer Behind the Mask

BYU-Idaho Radio · The Straw Maze: An Interview with Dallin Lochridge
With Halloween approaching, many are looking for ways to embrace fall and the Halloween season. The Straw Maze in Rexburg has been a popular location for families and college students enjoying a night outside. The Straw Maze in Rexburg is known for its huge straw maze and haunted forest.

“My favorite thing about The Straw Maze is when that brisk autumn air starts to nip, and you’re nice and toasty in warm clothes, and?you’re?out with friends, and you kind of just let the world melt away as you try to find your way out of a dark maze,” said Dallin Lochridge, general manager at The Straw Maze. ?

As an employee of The Straw Maze for more than 11 years, Lochridge has a lot of experience scaring people. He started out scaring customers dressed as a clown on stilts.

“It’s probably one of the funnest jobs you can have, as a scarer,” he said. “You put on the mask and some makeup and a costume, and you get into a persona. Nobody really knows who you are, usually, so you get to act a bit silly or spooky.”

All ages are welcome at The Straw Maze, and it is open Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays are open from 5 p.m. to midnight, while Saturdays open at noon.

The haunting begins the first weekend of October and is haunted Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight. The rest of the days and hours The Straw Maze is not haunted.
