The Spot: Independent Living

This week on BYU-Idaho Radio’s The Spot podcast, Grace Andrus, Camille Kolditz, Jill Clary, and special guest Holly Calhoun talked all about spiritual growth and becoming stronger in the gospel of Jesus Christ while navigating life as busy college students.

At this time in our lives, we are away from our parents and families, and are only responsible for ourselves. We discussed our experience becoming spiritually independent, and how we balance school with living the gospel, and being devoted disciples of Christ.

Grace shared that some of her friends have left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because of their new independence, and said, “Too many times people let the organization and the culture stray them away from the gospel.”

Camille shared that social media has also helped in persuading people to no longer be affiliated with the gospel and the Church. Holly shared a powerful way to counter that is by balancing our worldly perspective with God's perspective.

What helps you feel close to God outside of the classroom?

We shared a few ways we try to stay close to the Savior and our Heavenly Father, and how we strengthen our relationship with them:

  • Hikes
  • Temple attendance
  • Wholesome recreational activities
  • Ministering
  • Service projects
  • Social media fasts
  • Come, Follow Me
  • Scripture study
  • Attending devotionals
  • Church callings

Points for Jesus

Our special guest, Holly Calhoun, also shared what inspired her to create her podcast, Points for Jesus, and how stepping out of her comfort zone during a difficult time in her life helped her grow spiritually. In her podcast, she talks about Jesus Christ, discipleship, and what it means to be simply Christlike. Points for Jesus | Podcast on Spotify
