The Good Report: Civitan Club of Idaho Falls

The Civitan Club of Idaho Falls is dedicated to making the world a better place. The Civitan Club is a worldwide organization that has a small branch here in Idaho Falls. Occasionally, the club holds a meeting purely to help people come and see what they are all about. Idaho Falls’ Civitan Club President Nick Burrows says he got involved with the club when his boss suggested he find a service club to join.

Burrows has had many great experiences since he joined. He says, “Oh it’s a great experience. It’s one of those where there are so many opportunities to participate in service, participate in fellowship, and learn about different programs and opportunities in the community. And every week we have a lunch meeting... just attending those and getting to know the other members of the club... it’s been a great opportunity to really have meaningful involvement in the community.”

Being a part of the Civitan Club brings many opportunities to serve. The website for the Civitan Club says their motto is “To build good citizenship by providing a volunteer association of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.”

Burrows said just last week, they funded and helped with a Special Needs Prom at Hillcrest High School. Along with projects like that, their group volunteers at the local soup kitchen in Idaho Falls once a month.

The Civitan Club is making a long-term difference in the community of Idaho Falls with one of their projects. Burrow’s said, “We’ve partnered with the city of Idaho Falls the last two years, and we will be doing another one this year, where the Civitan Club uses proceeds from our Alive After 5 fundraiser to purchase new playground equipment.”

Along with helping make the community better, Burrows says one of his favorite parts of being a member of the club is the fellowship with other members. He said, “I’ve met some incredible people, and we have members that are in their 20’s to members that have been retired for 20 years... just a great range of people... everyone has come together because they want to do something that is good for the community. And because we all have that in common, we have an immediate bond.”

Burrows says the Civitan Club and helping the community in this way has been a great experience. If you would like to learn more, go to their Facebook page by searching Civitan Club of Idaho Falls. You can also attend one of their weekly meetings for more information.
