Whether you are studying business management or engineering, you most likely want a few refining skills that stand out and help you land your dream job after college. A common need in any industry is the need to communicate clearly and effectively.

Andra Hansen, BYU Idaho communication department faculty member, is running four workshops this semester that aim to help students learn the communication skills they need to succeed in any business. These workshops can benefit anyone of any major when they enter into the professional world. Hansen expressed that increased communication and collaborative skills help students to have a “leg-up” when entering their job field, making them more marketable.

“In alignment with college and department goals, I really want to prepare students to have a job before they graduate. If you just really sharpen those skills that’s going to make a significant difference to your professionalism both when you’re applying for the job and then after you get the job. There’s a lot of things you can do to build your credibility right out the gate regardless of your field,” Hansen says.

Having strong communication skills is a valuable skill to add to your resume. They are a necessary asset to any job setting or project.

Hansen says, “I’ve done a lot of interacting with employees and managers and leadership, and I’ve observed that very often communication related skills make or break a project or a team’s effectiveness. The project management association, they estimate that a third of projects fail because of communication failures.”

The Strengthen Your Base workshops will be held tentatively on May 21 and May 28. The additional dates are June 11 and July 9. The time and location for all four will be from 3:15-4:15 p.m. in the Smith building room 222. The topics for the June and July workshops are “Including visuals that communicate” and “communicating interpersonally.”
