A blend of smooth jazz and local art is happening in Rexburg this weekend with the January Jazz event featuring the Teton Jazz Quartet.
The quartet started a little over a year ago and features four students from BYU-Idaho. At their concert this weekend, you’ll hear the bass, guitar, drums and trumpet as they play classic smooth jazz from musicians like George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
Bass player Jackson Campbell hopes to share his love for jazz with the audience.
“Jazz itself is the most living music of anything I've played. I've played a lot of different styles of music, but it's the most interactive,” Campbell said. “It's the most intimate that you play with other musicians because you're always building and creating new things every time, even if you play the same song.”
January Jazz is Friday evening at 7 at the Romney Place Art Gallery and Events. In addition to hearing the music, art works from Mary Lou Romney, a renowned painter from St. Anthony known for her oil landscapes and Asian influence will be displayed.
“All we're going to be doing is playing music,” Campbell said.” There is also the art of a fantastic local artist that will be there on display. And I think especially for Eastern Idaho, worldwide fame is not something that's really popular here. So, to have an artist that has gained at some level world attention for her art, I think is something that would be a shame to miss out on.”
Tickets are $10 and can be found at MaryLouRomneyart.com.
“Do all you can just to keep an open mind when it comes to music and support others in their efforts,” Campbell said. “It feels good when you put effort into something and other people come and enjoy it.”
